Who We Are

The Greater Chicago Food Depository, Chicago’s food bank, is a nonprofit food distribution and training center. We make a daily impact across Cook County with a network of 650 pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, mobile programs, children's programs, older adult programs and innovative responses that address the root causes of hunger. One in six people in Cook County is food insecure, unsure of where or when they will have their next meal. Last year, the Food Depository distributed 70 million pounds of nonperishable food and fresh produce, dairy products and meat, the equivalent of 160,000 meals every day. Innovative training programs and initiatives developed by the Food Depository also work to provide men, women and children with the tools necessary to break their individual cycles of poverty.

The mission of the Greater Chicago Food Depository is providing food for hungry people while striving to end hunger in our community.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to enhance your food drive efforts by allowing you to learn firsthand what happens to your donations after they are received. It also provides an exciting team building environment. Thanks to the help of our dedicated volunteers—who provided more than 88,000 service hours last year—the Food Depository is able to feed the hungry in our community more efficiently. Book your volunteer session now and take the next step in the fight against hunger.

Get More Involved

The Food Depository hosts a number of special events annually to help fund our hunger-relief efforts and training programs. You can get more involved by attending one of these events, providing volunteer support, or through our various sponsorship opportunities. We would encourage you to consider organizing a walking team at our annual Hunger Walk, or visiting our CANstruction exhibit at the Merchandise Mart.

Advocate for Hunger Relief

Take a stand against hunger. Let your elected officials know that you support hunger-relief programs. The Greater Chicago Food Depository advocates for resources and policies that benefit our member agencies and help us stock our shelves for the nearly 812,000 men, women and children who turn to us each year.
